Apr 11, 2024

Aiming to promote forest recovery in the Amazon, recognizing it as a vital strategy to ensure not only the health of ecosystems, the maintenance and recovery of biodiversity, but also food security, the government of Acre, through its Secretary of the Environment, is hosting the Meeting of the Forum of Environment Secretaries of the Legal Amazon, in collaboration with the Governors’ Task Force for Climate and Forests (GCFtf).

In 2023, Acre hosted the 2nd Ordinary Meeting of the Forum of Environment Secretaries of the Legal Amazon and the Steering Committee of the Governors’ Task Force for Climate and Forests (GCF). It is the first time the Forum of Environment Secretaries met since then, now to discuss innovation and forest restoration in the Amazon region.

The agenda, taking place this Wednesday, April 10, at 9 AM at AFA Jardim in Rio Branco, has as its theme “Amazon 30: Innovation and Forest Restoration Ecosystem”. The meeting is part of the 27th Forum of Governors of the Legal Amazon, to be held on Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12, at the Auditorium of the State Department of Traffic (Detran), also in the Acrean capital.

Participants in the Meeting of the Forum of Secretaries include members of international cooperation with a history of working on the environmental agenda, coming from Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States, in addition to representatives of funds, economic sector initiatives like the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), NGOs, public and private sectors, as well as state secretaries and heads of powers.

Julie Messias, Secretary of the Environment of Acre, who is also the president of the Forum of Secretaries of the Legal Amazon and the Governors’ Task Force for Climate and Forests (GCF TF – Brazil), stated that the government of Acre is entering a new phase of preparation for receiving national and international investments, within the state’s environmental regularization policy to promote forest restoration projects.

“This agenda reflects the importance of international cooperation and the integration of different sectors so that together, we can tackle environmental challenges. Moreover, it addresses the urgency of forest restoration, and the need to boost it through innovative mechanisms”.

Moreover, the event discusses the need for innovation in financial mechanisms, the attraction of international cooperation partners, the private sector, banks, and philanthropic entities.

“We understand the importance of the meeting of the Secretaries of the Legal Amazon to discuss the needs and challenges and possible solutions to extreme events. The collaboration of different sectors strengthens the capacity for restoration and opens doors to the implementation of sustainable production systems, and that is why one of our strong points in this agenda will be the dialogue with the various interested sectors,” she added.
