Celebrating Transboundary Collaboration for Forest Conservation

Aug 24, 2024

In a significant stride towards fostering regional cooperation for environmental conservation, the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCFtf) celebrates a pivotal partnership between Acre, Brazil, and Pando, Bolivia. The Government of Acre has recently committed to supporting Pando’s efforts in developing its REDD+ policy, formalized through a significant document signing ceremony.

This collaboration builds upon the successful exchanges that took place in previous years, particularly the 2024 meeting in Pando, where Acrean delegates shared valuable expertise in sustainable forest management practices (read more about the exchange here). The recent agreement marks the next step in a series of ongoing efforts to enhance regional cooperation within the GCFtf network, which has been instrumental in facilitating such initiatives.

The document signing represents a formal commitment by Acre to support Pando’s REDD+ policy framework, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable development and climate resilience in the Amazon Basin. By leveraging the GCFtf platform, both jurisdictions aim to strengthen their capacities in forest governance, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement.

“Acre’s Government has extensive experience in implementing sophisticated environmental policies. We have previously coordinated with Governor Cameli, that made sure the State´s personnel would be coordinating this sort of exchange and further training to Pando. This is key for us to keep preserving the Amazon.” Pando’s Governor Regis Richter de Alencar.

This partnership aligns closely with the GCFtf’s strategic objectives, as outlined during the Technical Meeting in Santa Cruz, where participants explored innovative approaches to co-designing a New Forest Economy (learn more here). The GCFtf continues to support member jurisdictions by facilitating dialogue and resource-sharing, enabling them to play a proactive role in global climate action.

The collaboration between Acre and Pando exemplifies the power of regional alliances in addressing global environmental challenges. The formal signing of the agreement sets a precedent for transboundary cooperation in forest conservation, demonstrating how shared knowledge and experiences can drive impactful results.
